Do we need a customized agent to deploy on laptops outside LAN?

We have built an External Gateway server to allow the communication to get the reports from laptops connecting remotely. The set up between External GW and Master Inventory Server is designed and being configured (Inclusinf firewall rules set up andsecure file transfer ). We will need and agent that we can deploy via SCCM in this set up, to allow getting data from the laptops connecting outside of LAN and the Master. Do we need some kind of customization of the agent?
You'll need an agent creating with the DNS name of the external gateway in it for the agent to send data to it.
What most organisations do in this type of setup is create a single agent but with both the internal and external DNS names within the configuration.
That was if a machine is on the network it uses the internal address but if it leaves the network it uses the external address.
