Gert-Jan Kosterman asked a question.
Are computer- / host-names capped on 15 characters by the agent or the Inventory server?
Does anyone know if computer- / host-names are capped on 15 characters? It works out some VM's created by us in Azure are sometimes having more the 15 characters for the computer- / host-name. And these are shown in Inventory and so SLM with just 15 characters which sometimes causes these systems to look like duplicates but in reality they are unique. I know a quick solution would be: rename the current computer- / host-name to max 15 characters. But I would also like to know if this is a hardcoded thing or can it be modified somewhere?
Thanks,
Gert-Jan.
I just checked and although I cannot really say so far if we get duplicates, I see no device with a name longer than 15 characters.
Computers can have more than 15 characters but the only ones I can find are all coming from older versions of the agent that somehow fail to update.
The latest ones with 15+ characters are from version 6.2.1.
Let me know if you find something more. Have you opened a ticket?
Hi Samuel,
thanks for the quick reply. The ones with this issue are properly reporting via Windows agent 6.7.2.
And No I didn't open a ticket yet since my experience is: the change you get a quick useful reply via the community is much higher ;) But I will open one and see what I get back and when?
Kind regards,
Gert-Jan.
Wasn't aware of any hostname length limitation at that level (underlying DB tables tblComputer and DataClientView can accommodate 100 characters and 4000 characters respectively)
Just checked my environment (Inventory v6.6.1 and SLM v9.16) and I can see hostnames with 93 characters (from external SIM connector) as well as v6.5 agent fed of up to 38 characters and v6.7.1 of 34 characters. Can't comment for agent 6.7.2
Hi Colin,
I checked if we also have computers shown with more then 15 characters and indeed we have. Mainly MacBooks (agent 6.8.2) but also some laptops (6.7.2) so I think this is related to 6.7.2 agents running in Azure??
I will do some more investigation. I also created a case for this (04530558 ) but I will probably have to wait for a support reply a bit longer...
Thanks,
Gert-Jan.
