Why is Snow coalescing off of Name and/or Serial number for the ServiceNow integration?

The transform map "CsvComputerCustomFieldTransform" in the Snow Software CMDB Integration application within ServiceNow only has 1 coalesce and that is off of the Snow computer Id field. However, when we process our import, Snow is coalescing off of Name and/or Serial Number. Our Identification and Reconciliation in ServiceNow looks at Correlation ID, then Serial Number, then Name.

Had Snow Globe case open for over a month. Never a response with any type of answer except to call ServiceNow Support and they tried to help, but need Snow since Snow designed and sells the product to integrate with ServiceNow.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi Shane, happy to walk you through how this works.

A ServiceNow customer may have any number of CI classes in use for classifying their computers, including custom CI classes.

E.g. some would classify a laptop as "Personal Computer", others would not, and others have created custom CI classes to match their company processes. Some would want to identify their servers based on serial numbers, while others would use FQDN, etc.

The identification rules for each class is defined in the CI Class Manager editor:

    Screenshot

When the ServiceNow transform process is running, it expects to evaluate the payload against the rules of a specific CI class in order to determine the identity. This means you need to pre-determine the class you want to evaluate a computer against when you submit the payload to the Identification and Reconciliation engine for identification.

In other words, if you want to match a computer against the Linux CI Class Identification rules, you need to tell the Identification and Reconciliation that your data payload is destined for the Linux CI Class (and its identification rules).

This pre-classifying step is performed in the CI Class Mapping editor, where Snow provides a default set of rules but which should be adapted/added to if required.

    Screenshot

When the transform runs, there is an OnBefore script that uses this mapping table to direct the payload to the correct CI Class (and its identification rules), and the IRE engine returns a matching SysID if the computer is found.

This is all according to best practices from ServiceNow, and is something we are evaluated on each time we go through the certification process.

I have put together a summary diagram to show how this works. Note that the process is different for the Product Model data - the IRE process only relates to the CMDB computers.

ITSM - Snow to SN Identification and Asset Creation Data Flow

Note, the IRE process is only used for identifying the computer object. Any subsequent transforms, such as Network, Disk, CustomFields, etc, use the Snow Computer ID to link the data back to the correct computer.

Happy to explain further, or jump on a Teams/Zoom call if needed.

    Kind regards

    Johannes

  • I believe there are very few of us using the ServiceNow connectors. Each time log a call or post to the community, very little response comes back.

I would also be interested in the answer to this question.

    • I agree. It would be great if they would even tell us how they designed the integration vs dumping us over to ServiceNow Support who doesn't have the answer. My hope is that someone here knows because I can't find how it's working in a transform map nor Identification & Reconciliation. I've made multiple updates over the month including an escalation request. Also, when I call the support number, I get an audio recording and voicemail. Hopefully, we will both learn together and provide help for any in the future!

    Hi @Shane Davis,

I am not one of the technicians that work with ServiceNow, but reading your question I am not sure which Name/Serial coalescing you are referring to. This could be from a lack of knowledge about ServiceNow :)

Are you referring to the import to SLM (Home -> Administration -> Update existing computers)?

    • Oskar,

Thank you for your reply. I am speaking of the transform map within ServiceNow. You can follow the steps below to get there. Once you filter on the target table, you see two transform maps; CsvComputerInsertTransform and CsvComputerCustomFieldTransform. The first one has 26 mappings, but no coalesce. For the second one, it has 1 field map and it coalesce's off of u_computerid.

We verified multiple times that our system is coalescing off of Name and/or Serial Number during the Snow import. However, there isn't a coalesce for this and not the way our Identification and Reconciliation (IRE) is setup.

      ServiceNow's left nav menu >

      Snow Software CMDB Integration >

      Transform Maps >

Filter where Target table is cmdb_ci_computer

Thank you for any help that you can provide,

      Shane

        Hi @Shane Davis,

I'm sorry but I can't give an answer on this, therefor I've requested a colleague with more experience on the ServiceNow side to reply.

Hope you can get a good answer from him!

WOW, you are now the best fried of everyone who has integrated Snow with ServiceNow! I really appreciate all of the time that you spent documenting this information. It is a great help. We configured our IRE CI Class Manager for Computer and also have reviewed the CI Class Mapping editor during the Snow integration. Ours are a bit different than yours and I would like to Zoom with you to discuss, but first need to find our what our agreement is to discuss our design with you. I will get back with you ASAP on this.

Again, your time and documentation is immensely appreciated!

        Thank you,

        Shane
