Hello Togehter, does anyone have experience scanning applications installed/running on the Windows Linux subsystem (WSL)?

Our developers are using WSL and install various applications there. These are not yet recognized by the Windows Agent.

For me it currently looks like the snowagent.config needs to be adjusted, but I'm not sure if this is the right solution.

Above all, what is then recognized: An application that is installed on Windows under Linux?

    • Done some more digging, and this 4 year old post appears to indicate that the Linux agent didn't play well with WSL.

      • Yeah, I'd really like to use the snow agent with WSL, I think it would be a great way to experiment with the Linux agent without needing to switch machines. I'd be very interested to hear if there's any progress, last time all I got was a seg fault.

  • Further to this, and actually reading the conversation in the link I posted, @Detlev Eufinger installed the Snow Linux agent on WSL. It doesn't detail the results of this test. Might be worth reaching out to see the results of this.

  • Hello Colin,

thanks you for your feedback, too bad there is no better news on this.

Can you tell me possibly how you solved the problem?

    • Hi Tina,

Haven't solved the problem unfortunately. We haven't really looked into WSL to be honest. There has been lots of chat in the past about Snow supporting containers etc, idea here but still nothing forthcoming.

  • Hi Colin,

    thanks for the information.

    have a nice day, Tina

  • Hi all,

Did anyone manage to find any further information on this please ?

I'm interested to know if the Linux Agent will run within the WSL environment, or if it's enough to have the native Windows Agent and if that will see the deployed apps within it...

    Hi Sammeln,

You need to install the Snow Linux agent on your WSL Linux. This is how I did it with my virtual Ubuntu. The Snow Linux Agent then provides the inventoried data.

    Regards Siggi

    • Hi Siggi,

Thanks, that worked ok which was of course good news!... but I have two issues:

      1. WSL is not reported by the Windows host (within WSL, uname -r reports "5.10.102.1-microsoft-standard-WSL2", yet SLM reports "Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2" as a known application
      2. The WSL instance seems to have no relationship to the host instance directly.... they exist in SLM as two unrelated records. Is this expected behaviour ? - if so I'm just going to adopt a naming convention to link them

What are your thoughts on this please Siggi ?

I wonder if anyone else has encountered the same issues too...?
