Multiple VMware entries per computer

I thought I saw an entry a while back about this topic, but cannot find it now.

I am at SIC 5.18. I am seeing three entries per VMWare instance or computer. One shows the client agent version and the other two show the SIC version. Is there a reason I would need three entries per VMware Host or Guest?

The BIOS Serial number for the three same instances are different. That may be why it has three in inventory. But all this is doing is consuming extra SNOW licenses.

Anyone else seeing this or have a workaround?

  • Hi Marc, I do not exactly what you are referring to, but from my experience I can tell you following With one of the recent SIM versions (5.14 or a bit later) Snow implemented in VSphere scanner a feature to "Report VM's individually". That means it would send also not inventoried VM's and add them in SLM as computer with rudimental information.   I did a first test and saw it added not inventoried computers, but additionally duplicated the already inventoried computers. So I had one computer from agent and a further computer from SIM.   Following that Snow implemented in snowserver.config the possibility to configure HOSTNAME_NORMALISATION for that. Then Snow Inventory Server checks, if the same computer comes from SIM and agent and then does not duplicate the computer.   I assume this can be reason for your behaviour. So you should check your settings in SIM and snowserver.config. Up to now in our environments "Report VM's individually" in VSphere scanner is deactivated.   So my computers lists, the datacenter list and  computer reports are ok, no duplicated computer Another issue is the report "Physical and virtual servers per datacenter"   Here I can see all computers duplicated, once for example as s00001 and once as s00001.domain.de   For this I created a ticket CS0058400 and got the information, that a PRB was created and currently is in test. Perhaps that may help you

  • Hi, This is a known issue and have been since SLM version 9.3.x. Snow is working on a fix in the upcoming release 9.6.1. Not sure when this is expected, but some at Snow have said this will arrive in Q1. Not sure if the SLM9.6 update will every be released due to all the changes that will come in 9.6.1.  I talked to Snow support yesterday and have information that a hot-fix for those who have SLM 9.5.1. Not sure when this will arrive, but we see this issue on many Snow installations, both SPE and on-prem.  MB

  • Do you mean in SLM, when listing all VMware servers (hosts and guests) you see 3 records for each server? Here, running SIM 5.17 and SLM 9.5.0, I checked now and I see only one per server. Is that a behavior you started to notice after moving to 5.18?
    • Yes in SLM, or the reports from SLM. Two show coming form the connector as source and the other is the client agent.
