Windows Server Compliance - manual check
I have a Hyper-V host running 8 Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs on 2 12-core processors. We use the Windows Server 2019 license model and the "Windows Server Assessment - 2019 licensing" report recommends 60 x 2-core packs i.e. 120 licensable cores . I was convinced that I actually needed to cover 24 cores for each set of 2 VMs (4 sets in total) i.e. 96 cores . I ran the compliance calculation again just in case but same results. When I go to this server in SLM it shows the following: Is it me going nuts and I do not know how to calculate or am I missing something? Do I need 96 or 120 cores?

  • Hi Samuel, Two people, same question That the same issue i posted today in ‌ In my opinion the calculation is wrong and I already had discussions about that with Snow. My ticketid is CS0043610
    • Thanks a lot for pointing to this other thread, I assume this one can be closed now.
      • Good to know you also noticed that issue.

Hi Samual, You will need to use the compliance exclusion feature to exclude the HyperV host from the calculation (assuming dedicated to the management of the virtual machines). 96 core is correct per your initial assessment, the reason the 120 cores is being stated is the requirement to license the host (2 x 12 core processors = 24 cores) in addition to covering the 8 VM's (8 / 2 = 4 VM pairs x 24 cores = 96 cores). Once you use the compliance exclusion and recalc compliance, you will notice the requirement should drop to 96 core licenses of Windows Server Std.  There have been some enhancements to the compliance exclusion feature to support users ability in more complex environments to easily find and exclude HyperV hosts in recent SLM update version 9.3 specifically, Refer to the 9.3 release notes Extract copied below for convenience. Custom Fields in Exclusions   Added custom fields as available criteria of applications or computers dynamic filter in Compliance   exclusion edit page. Added new criterion in Compliance Exclusions   To simplify creation of the exclusion for "Hyper-V only" hosts added "Has Windows Server VMs" criterion   in Computers automatic filter in Compliance Exclusions. I hope this helps. Mike

    • Hi Yes I did configure the exclusion but it excludes all the VMs as well as I commented in this other thread Any idea?

Let have a quick call if you have time so I can see what first hand. Let me know a convenient time and a number to call you on, I've sent an email for you to reply to.
        • Hi Mike, Thanks for the call, I appreciate the quick answer and your availability. As discussed, I deactivated the exclusion to be able to compare. I will wait for the DUJ to run and then we can share the results amybe on Monday.
