Change password in Inventory SMACC

Hi all,

This question has been on my mind for a while now...

Is there no way to change my password in the Inventory SMACC? (we have Snow Inventory v5.4.00)

It seems we can add and remove users, but not edit?  How do people change their passwords?

Regards, David

  • Hi David, Internally, we have always deleted and re-created the users as there appears to be no way to edit the accounts from the interface. For safety, passwords are encrypted in the database in table tblSystemUser so no way to do it from the backend. That "Edit account" function is a good candidate for a feature request . Regards
    • Thanks Sam!  OK ... so if a user found out their password had become compromised, we would have to delete their account (and then we can re-create it). Allowing a user to change their own password does seem like an important feature request then.  An "Edit Account" function would also be good. Thanks.
      • I fully support that feature request. PLUS: Snow, please give us some user roles for SI, at least an additional "read only" role. Best regards Stefan
      • Yes, the account for access to the SMACC can be deleted and re-created. Unfortunately this is the only solutaion available so far.
  • Hi all, I also would support this Feature Request. It is definitely not possible to change the password at the moment. During installation of SI you need to configure an administrator, and my mistake was, that I used my userid for that. So I cannot change my SI password any more. I asked Snow support and they told me the password can only be changed by SQL in the database. It's an encrypted value in a table column. For the other users in Snow inventory it's possible to "change the password" by deleteing and recreating the user. For my userid that's unfortunately not possible. I currently work with a very old Snow Inventory password.

    • Hi Carola,  This might help you:   ... it's interesting to know that a user can be created with a 'known' password and then SQL can be used to copy the (encrypted) password to another user. Regards, David
      • Hi David, Many thanks for this link, it really helped me. I didn't know that table. Although Stefan mentioned, not to do this with the own Administrator account I used this to update my admin password. We also have a test system and therefore I could test this before changing this in production. So now my admin password in production is changed,

        • Hi Carola, I mentioned not to do that, as there is one field that is different. The column  isAdmin is 1 for the primary admin account, while in my example and the script is is set to 0. I'm not sure what issues this might cause, but you probably want to verify that this is still set to 1 in your environment. best regards, Stefan

          • Hi Stefan, Thanks for your very quick reply. But I did not use the insert. I used an update for my admin account, because I wanted to change my password. I did following, but only after several tests in my separate staging environment. in SMACC for SI : Created a temporary User and gave this user the password I wanted for my admin account by SQL select all users so I got the password for this temporary user : select * from [SnowInventory] . [inv] . [AccessControl]  Copy the password from this created user Update table for my admin account update [SnowInventory] . [inv] . [AccessControl] set Password = 'pasted password from temp user' where username = 'AdminAccount'  in SMACC: Delete that temporary user in SMACC So at last it was possible to change the Snow Inventory Password for my Admin account. But I also would recommend to do this only after tests in a separate environment.

          • Thanks for explaining that  ‌.  I thought you were saying not to do it because of the weak password used in your example, so it's good to know about the  isAdmin   column.  Much appreciated. Regards, David
