How to discover the age of hardware?

What's the easiest way to discover computers' date of manufacture?

I'd like to verify the age of all our hardware. 

I'm not too enthusiastic about the thought of entering the date of purchase by hand.

Has anyone had any success connecting Snow to serial number-recognition services like warrantymaster .com?

Is there a better approach?

Any musings, welcome!

    HP allows you to enter BIOS serial numbers by batches of 20 here ... ok, this is still pretty manual but the warranty date would give you a date fairly close to the purchase date.

    If you can get a list with something unique like serial number and the purchase date. You will able to update the computers in bulk by doing an import in SLM,.using the standard  functionality. You can also automate it and run the import on schedule.

      Hi Johan, this is a good idea. Keep in mind that if you want to use the import template, you have first to export all the data for all the computers you want to update. An empty field in the Excel template that is imported will result in deleted data in SLM (i.e. set to ). That can lead to corrupted records in case you accidently ify a required field such as Disable Auto Editing (a feature improvement has been submitted for this behaviour already). Regards

      Thanks Johan. I'll try that.  My worry is that the serial numbers in our CMDB are intially entered by hand so are prone to occasional error. (Zeros substituted for O, One instead of I or L, etc)  It would be great if Snow offered access to a database of serial numbers and warranty/build-date.

    A quick and dirty approach is to use the standard field - Bios Date -  yes it could be out by a bit if you actually update the BIOS, but in most cases it will work as a rough approximation - you can guarantee that the hardware is no Newer that the BIOS date.
