Snow Inventory Gateway Server - Setup on Domain Controller

Hi Community,

I'm trying to set up Snow Inventory 5.4.0 as a Service Gateway (SGS) on a Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 that is also a Read-Only Domain Controller.

The server does not properly deal with any client communication when running under the "Local System" account. Still, it shows the blue "Snow Web Page" when accessed with a browser.

However, when we use a Domain Admin account to run the server (which is definitely a NO GO for a production system), the SGS works well and all agent communication works well.

Hence the question: What specific rights, group memberships, ... are needed for a service account on a Win2k8R2 SP1 RoDC? Has anyone already succeeded in configuring a service account on a domain controller?

The Snow Agent works well under the local system account on this machine, and is also able to communicate with the master server when configured to do so.

Thanks for your support!

Best regards

Stefan Libiseller

P.S.: We made sure that this issue is not related to any firewall/networking problem.

P.P.S.: ? as discussed

Hi Stefan, thanks for bringing the issue up here. You should also log a support ticket. I don't know the specific rights needed for running the gateway. Therefore I cannot assume why domain admin works fine and local system not. ‌ or ‌, you have seen many gateways. Do you might have a general advice? Best regards, Alex

Hi Stefan, Hi Alex, I never installed third party software like Snow on a Windows RoDC. Till now I avoid to install application software on Windows DCs. (One old Windows recommendation is: DC should be only a DC.) Sorry, I have no advice how to configure Snow GW Server on a RoDC. Regard Siggi
      • Hi Siggi, I know that recommendation quite well and always tend to stick with it. However, in the given scenario, there are little other options however (I don't fancy installing SGS on a SQL cluster node either) - hence we gave it a try. Thanks, best regards Stefan
