How to push an update to config for snowagent

Hi,

We have recently made changes to our config and need to push the changes to all the assets within the database.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to do this as I really don't want to run another agent deployment and was hoping there was a way to push the new config out to the machines that I've already discovered/deployed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

  • Hi Dan, if you are using Inventory 5 then this is a simple process using the inventory 5 server SMACC tool to create a config deployment to whatever target machines you need. if it's an older version you'll need to copy out manual/another tool
  • Thanks all for your support.  What I found was that the original change to the config file hadn't been registered by the INV SMACC, so I made another dummy change to the config and then returned it to the desired settings and since then the machines have updated themselves as they communicate with the INV server.  I know it will probably take longer to reach all agents this way, however, it's also a good indication as to which machines aren't pushing their data back as often as required and we can then easily identify them analyse why.

    • Hi Daniel, I did exactly what was written here in the post, but I cann't get it work. You mentioned something about "the config file hadn't been registered by the INV SMACC". What does it mean? After reading your post, I just tried to dive into the Inv SMACC again, and opened configurations... in there I did an import of my configuration file, went through the steps, finished it and then repeated again the "create update" thing... I'm waiting now for the result... By the way my post here . Thanks!!!

  • Hi Daniel, [ Edit: See Emmanuel's comment below about the standard name for the config file to push, it must be " snowagent.config "] In the SMACC on the Snow Inventory server, there is an "Agent Update" section. I recommend you first create a "View" that contains only the set of computers that you want to target (very straightforward, just copy an existing view and adjust the filters), that View will be used to indicate what computers will receive the updated config file. You can follow those steps: Regards

    • Hello, just to precise: the config file MUST BE named "snowagent.config" in order to be pushed as a config file. see below: ServiceNow
  • Hi,

    How to push the snowagent.config file from SMAAC and what are the changes need to do?

    Please help.

    Best Regards,

    Giri.

  • Hi Giri,

    You are posting on a forum thread that is expressly answering that question...please take time to read the above answers, there is a link to the SMACC user guide, and I would also suggest taking Samuel's advice in creating a view to target a subset of devices to receive the update. It's less of a push, more of a pull. e.g. when an agent performs a heartbeat check-in, it determines whether or not it has any updates to take, if a config change has been made and the machine checking in matches the criteria (e.g. same config name, member of defined view) then it will take the update.

    • Hi Colin,

      I have changed the config file as mentioned below in the master server:

      C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Inventory\Agent

      <Server>

      <Endpoint>

      <Address>https://Masterserver:443</Address>

      </Endpoint>

      <Endpoint>

      <Address>http://Masterserver:80</Address>

      </Endpoint>

      </Server>

      I have created a new view with a different config name will that work because as of now i haven't seen any agents. If it will not work how to change the config name as a previous one because in edit view there is no option to change.

      Please check and let me know.

      Best Regards,

      Giri.

      • You should be able to update/add any files you like to an agent using SMACC. If you export the edited config file you have made, naming it snowagent.config...

        export to fileand then using the 'Agent Updates' section, create a new update and 'Add support files', choosing your new snowagent.config file...

        specify support filesYou can choose your pre-defined view as a target on the following screen...

        define view

        Once complete, it should create an agent update job that will update the endpoints defined when they next 'check-in'.

        As an aside, defining multiple endpoints as you have in your agent configuration has the following effect...

        Server Endpoint..that is to say, you have no control over what endpoint the agent uses. This may be ok for your environment.
