Find Virtual machines on which the user only uses 1 or 2 applications.
Hi,
We have some virtual machines (with certain prefix, VM-01/VM-02 etc) which are used by endusers for limited purposes (application set) only.
We would like to find (via Snow) all VM machines on which a users only uses 1 or 2 applications.
So we would need vm name then the applications being used/started.

User Machine Applications Used Last Used
John VM01 Firefox 2 December 2020
Chrome 15 March 2021
Please advise.

Hi Steven,
you can use the 'Applications per computer and user' report and set an filter on computer name. You then use the column selector to add the required columns such as last used.
Kind regards,
Jelle
Thanks Jelle. That's for 1 computer, but we have few hundreds to look at. How can we do this in bulk for all machines starting with VM*?
Hi Steven,
You can use the % wildcard using the Applications per Computer report that Jelle mentioned to search for computers starting with VM%

Connor.
Hi Steven,
Connor is correct. you can add wildcard criteria like below.
you can find more information on how to set criteria in the user guide section 16 - Reports. the user guide is available by clicking on your username in Snow WebUI (top left hand corner) then selecting help, and user guide. this will open up the Snow globe web page with a link to the document which you can download.

Hi,
in addition to what @Jelle Wijndelts explained, you can add some fine-tuning to the report mentioned:
Grouping by "Computer name" will give you the number of unused applications.
If you use "Greater than" as the operator for the column "Last used" the group will show the number of used applications.
Od course, you can change the date in the column header to select applications used before or after 01/01/2021 or whatever is of interest to you.
Kind regards,
Axel
Thanks, so I had to filter on greate or equal to a date and I get my results.
Though there are a lot of applciations which are system applications and so not relevant to me. So have to filter them out one by one.
Maybe there is also a way to get top most used applications on computers with name VM% ?
Another remark: I have filtered all applications per computer (VM%), so I see VM01 has 10 applications, VM02 23 applications etc. Is there a way to sort on that (if I click on applications to sort, it doesn't sort on the numbers -I guess it sorts on names-)?
Hi Steven,
clicking on the column header will sort that column based on the information held in it. e.g. application name will then sort alphabetically whereas last used will sort by date. Are you also aware you can save the report including the filters and sorting that you have set as a new report? By saving it you will not have to keep recreating the filters. Once you have set the criteria click on the three dots at the top of the screen and select save report. Save the report with a new name and next time you open the report it will already have the filters and sorting applied. It is also possible to export the results into excel should you wish to manipulate the data more, to export click on the three dots and select export as xls.
Jelle
Thanks.
