Office WindowsApps

Have someone made any experience with Office WindowsApps (StoreApps)? I have the following problem:

In the Dell Windows 10 Image is a pre-installed Office Desktop. Normally we dub our own Windows 10 Image (via Ivanti), but in some location on the world this Dell Windows Image will be retained. Now Snow recognizes correctly under c:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.office.desktop*** all Office *.exe-files (see screenshot below with example of MS Access).

I have currently found no solution to delete/uninstall this path or *.exe-files in a "satisfactory way". Under 'Program and Features' these installations do not appear. The Office 'Easy Fix Tools' from Microsoft doesn't work successfully. Also the 'Remove -AppxPackage' with PowerShell doesn't work sufficient, but now I'm able to delete the *.exe-files manually.

  • As information The Snow DIS team now changed the Software recognition rules. Exe files in the ..windowsapps.. path no longer are listed as installed apps and therefore do not appear as  license requirement any more.
  • Hi Ines, currently I'm waiting to get a Computer here in Germany in order to check this issue intensively. But in SLM these applications (Microsoft Office 2016 products) are marked as license required (see screenshot). In Addition to our Office 2013 Standard the pre-installed WindowsApps (StoreApps) are also listed as license required. Only if we have an Office 2016 Standard on the Computer, the pre-installed products will be "overwritten" with the Standard products. Except the Access, because this is not contained in the bundel (see screenshot). I will inform you when I have checked the activation of the MS products on a computer. But does it make any difference for Snow whether the product is activated or not? From License compliance view yes, but Snow doesn't recognize this activation and I can't depicted it. So I have to find a solution how to delete this pre-installed applications automatically. Best regards Matthias

Hi Matthias, from the license compliance view the pre-installed product only needs to be licensed if it has been activated. You can check this by opening Word for example, on one of these computers. If it opens normally, it is activated, if not a dialog for activation or purchase appears.   Are these applications marked as license required? Please can you provide me a screenshot . So I can do futher investigations. Best regards, Ines
  • Hi ?, ? I recently also noticed the same problem in our environment, a lot of Microsoft Office 2016 Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, ... applications that are listed as installed applications without any bundle recognition. As I checked this a bit more deeper I found the filepath c:\program files%\WindowsApps\... for that exe's. Microsoft itself says, they are using the path Windowsapps as a depot, from where an installation easily can be started or activated. To activate the application a code is required and we noticed the exe then was moved to the normal path \Program files\Microsoft Office\...  We are currently again in a Microsoft SAM recertification and also asked our auditor how to handle this. The auditor told us: Applications in the path  \program files\WindowsApps do not require a license. But in SLM they are marked as License required and that's not ok. I meanwhile created a ticket at Snow support, and asked them to mark that files in windowsapps as "no License required" Or is there another solution? How do you handle this?

  • Hi  , that's good news. Now the Microsoft Access report looks much better again

Hi Matthias, thank you for raising this. It seems as our recognition works just as it should. It recognizes the exe file and maps it to the designated application. Snow's goal is to give you a clear overview of what is relevant from a license perspective. I am guessing that if you have the exe file located on the computer, it will require a license. The right way to resolve this would be either to license the product or to remove it. However a clear statement can only give you a license consultant. Maybe  can jump in here? /marcel
