Question:

Can I do a quick and dirty discovery with no SNMP or username-password? Will the quick and dirty discovery provide me with any usable insight in the interim?

Answer:

You may run a Discovery scan without inputting credentials, however, all of the devices will be listed as Inaccessible Devices. An inaccessible device will not display meaningful data, except the IP address of the device.

For background information; Subnets will define the scope of the assessment. The RN150 will only scan subnets that have been entered, saved, and selected to be scanned. During the Discovery phase, the Appliance will use ICMP to discover devices. When a device responds to an ICMP ping, the RN150 will then query the device to see which ports are open. When a device has the SNMP port 161 open, the Appliance will attempt to access the device using the first entered SNMP string. If the string passes, inventory details for the devices will be collected. If the first string fails, the Appliance will then use the next entered string, moving down the list, until a match is found or the list is exhausted.
