When performing vCenter discovery, the MgsIPScan error can occur on beacon versions 17.0 and previous if you’re using an outdated version of NpCap.

When the MgsIpScan error occurs

  • The .err file on the beacon will show: dnet: Failed to open device eth0QUITTING!

You can locate the .err file on the beacon in the following directory: C:\Windows\TEMP\ManageSoft\discovery

  • The MgsIPScan error will also appear in the discovery log.

How to correct the MgsIPScan error

warning yellow.png Important: The following instructions are for use on beacon versions 17.0 or previous.
  1. Download the MgsIPScan.zip file attached to this article and extract the contents.
  2. Uninstall the old version of NpCap on the beacon located at C:\Program Files (x86)\NpCap\uninstall.exe.
  3. Install the new version of NpCap from the zip file attached to this article (npcap-1.00.exe).
  4. Back up the current MgsIPScan folder, located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Flexera Software\Inventory Beacon\Remote Execution.
  5. Copy the extracted MgsIPScan folder from the zip file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Flexera Software\Inventory Beacon\Remote Execution.
  6. Rerun the rule and check the discovery log to see if the error is resolved.
