If you see several devices in the asset report with “ACCESS DENIED” status, this may be due to the Windows credential not having the right privilege level to access the WMI classes.

The user account must have local or domain administrator privilege to collect the WMI classes from a Windows device. You can use wbemtest.exe to verify the account has the correct privilege level and that the service is running on the remote device.

Below are instructions on using wbemtest.exe to verify that the account has the correct privilege level and that the service is running.

Solution

  1. In Windows, select Start, type wbemtest, select enter.
  2. Select Connect in the top, right corner.
  3. Enter Namespace = \\(computer name)\root\cimv2, replacing the computer name with the hostname or IP you wish to test.
  4. Enter the Windows account username and password.
  5. Select Connect.

Successful authentication will result in WbemServices and tabs no longer being greyed out. Failure to authenticate will result in an error message.

Once you have resolved the privilege issues, select request rescan in the virtual appliance dashboard to update the inventory.
