How Does Usage Intelligence Handle Virtual Machines?
How Does Usage Intelligence Handle Virtual Machines?
For Usage Intelligence, a virtual machine is treated just like any other independent physical machine. Therefore if your software is installed on 2 separate VMs on the same physical machine, each of these VMs will have its own fingerprint and will be tracked as 2 independent installations.
Virtual Machine Detection
As of SDK version 5.3 and later (released 11 June 2018), the SDK can detect the type of Virtual Machine it is running on. The following is a list of supported Virtual Machines:
Windows
- Bochs
- Hyper-V
- Parallels
- ThinApp
- VirtualBox
- Virtual PC
- VMware
- Wine
- Xen
Linux and Mac
- Hyper-V
- Parallels
- VirtualBox
- Virtual Iron
- Virtual PC
- Xen
Virtual Machine Reporting
Virtual Machine reports may contain <NULL> and Other values. The value <NULL> indicates that a virtual machine was not detected. The value Others indicates that a virtual machine was detected but the type could not be identified.
Clients running the Usage Intelligence SDK version 5.2 and earlier or the Java version will have their Virtual Machine property reported as <NULL>.
