Unable to See or Access Mapped Path During Installation

Unable to See or Access Mapped Path During Installation

Summary

When accessing a network location using a mapped path, the location may not show up during installation

Symptoms

When accessing a network location using a mapped path, the location may not show up during installation. This is applicable to newer OSes starting from Vista to later versions of Windows that contain the UAC technology.

Cause

This behavior essentially occurs due to how UAC handles mapped network drives. In order to access a mapped location from an elevated process, the drives should also be mapped in the context of the elevated login. For further details regarding this, please refer to the Additional Information section of this article.

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue on the particular machine that is having trouble accessing the mapped location during install, please do the following steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start Menu, search for Regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following node: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System
  3. Create a new DWORD value called EnableLinkedConnections with the value of 1.
  4. Restart your machine.
  5. Start an Administrative Command Prompt and create the mapped drive using the net use command. For instance, "net use M: \\server\path".
