IS2011 Working Installation Now Broken

Help!

I have an installation that worked fine up to early last week and now just hangs after progressing through the UI. I've compared logs between a version that works and one that doesnt and have found an area of interest below.

This one works (note the red text which ismissing from the one that doesnt). It may not be relevant, but i've noticed that the costs text is now "calculating costs" when progressing through the custom setup screen.

I cannot recall anything major being changed between the 2 versions (just a SQL script updated) but am happy to be told otherwise if there is anything that may have been broken inadvertently.

To the untrained eye, it looks like it is doing something completely different after clicking next on the welcome screen.

Any assistance much appreciated as I am currently unable to create a deployable install.

OK.

I chanced a comparison between a known working version and the latest to see what (if anything) had changed.

It showed only 3 things to have changed (apart from the upgrade info and product version) 3 strings used on shortcuts.

I changed they were

ProductName V3.1
and were now

ProductName V3.1.2/4
Changing these to

ProductName V3.1.2
instead fixed the problem!!

Go figure.

Interestingly, this string can be seen in the none working log as the final Note
MSI (c) (F4:C8) [12:23:15:747]: Note: 1: 1324 2: ProductName V3.1.2/4 3: 1
Maybe it was trying to tell me something!!!

Hopefully this will help someone in the future and save much banging of head against the wall and lost time (3 days in my case)

It may have been. You can generally get a better idea what those messages mean by looking up the number after the 1: on MSDN's Windows Installer Error Messages list. There it says 1324 means "The folder path '[2]' contains an invalid character." ([2] refers to ProductName in your message)
