Chained msi questions

Regarding chained msi packages for IS2009, is a reboot absolutely required after installing Windows Installer 4.5 before proceeding with my product installation (an InstallScript MSI project)? Does the answer depend on the operating system (XP / 2003 / Vista)?

If a reboot is required it makes no sense for me to include Windows Installer 4.5 as a redistributable, because the product installation would immediately proceed ... but the chained packages would not install. It sounds like I would need to request the user to manually install it, reboot, then install my product. I think some of our customers would be irritated by the necessity to reboot twice (we already require a reboot at the end of our product install).

Any information appreciated, thanks.

The jury's still out on the full answer, but see http://community.installshield.com/showthread.php?t=182418 for part of your answers. In summary: Vista and Server 2008 require reboots after installing MSI 4.5; XP appears to require a reboot as well if you want to use chaining, despite that it's supposed to work with the hotpatched installation. I've not heard the results specific to 2003, but I expect they'll largely match XP.

Hmmm, Christopher Painter's post earlier today seems to be related to the same problem:

Apparently the reboot is required (#*@!). at least until someone can find a way around it.

Yup. I say the jury's still out because it just might be something our setup.exe is doing wrong that we could fix. But I don't think it is, and if I'm right, there's only the reboot option.
