Make Obsolete vs. Return Device for FlexNet Operations Cloud

Summary

What's the difference between the "Return Device" and "Make Obsolete" options under Edit Device in the Producer Portal?

Question

What's the difference between the "Return Device" and "Make Obsolete" options under Edit Device in the Producer Portal?

Answer

Make Obsolete - This option is available only from the Producer Portal and not available to end users. If you make a device obsolete you can still generate a response from the Producer Portal.

For example, if the obsolete device has a license generated on it you can download the response from the Producer Portal. This is for internal use only.
  • Go to View Device -> View -> Download Response
Once the device (Device123456) is obsolete, its ID changes to something like Device123-OBSOLETE-456. So another device can be created with the same device ID Device123456.

Return Device - The application allows an end user to return a device he owns from the Enterprise Portal. The return can also happen from Producer Portal. Return device is intended for cases where this device ID will never again need to receive a capability response or license file.

Both Return Device and Make obsolete operations are irreversible.
