Retroactive licence compatibility

Jump to solution

Hi

One of our customers releases a new Product for each major version of their software.

Is it possible to allow a licence for the latest Product to be applicable for all previous Products?

Hi @andybevan

Yes, however it will depend on how licensing is implemented in the Product.  Here are a couple simple scenarios:

A license generated for Product V1 has feature f1 v1.0

A license generated for Product V2 has feature f1 v1.0 and an additional feature f2 v1.0.  This license for Product V2 will also work with Product V1 as well as it only requires feature f1 v1.0.

OR

A license generated for Product V1 has feature f1 v1.0

A license generated for Product V2 has feature f1 v2.0.  This license for Product V2 will also work with Product V1 as well as the request for f1 v1.0 will be satisfied by a f1 v2.0 license.  The license is backward compatible but not forward compatible.  The license for Product V1 will not work with Product V2 as the feature version required for Product V2 (2.0) is greater than the version available in the Product V1 license (1.0)

Hi jberthold

That is great.  We suspected that it would be Feature related, but I had no idea the power that versioning of Features had.

I think this fulfils the customer request, so thank you!
