I'm excited to announce that Flexnet Manager Suite 2021 R1 for our On-Premise customers is just around the corner, in this article I'll be summarising the key updates included in this release.

The 2021 R1 release is already available in FNMS Cloud and will be available to On-Premises customers on August 2nd 2021.

What is included?

This latest release includes a number of major features as well as several key changes:

Kubernetes discovery and inventory

Continuing with our investment around containers, we are pleased to introduce support for Kubernetes inventory, this is installed on each of your Kubernetes clusters and will provide discovery and inventory data of the nodes.

This involves connecting to the Kubernetes APIs which means that most technologies that use these should work however the ones we've tested as working are:

  • Minikube
  • kind (Kubernetes In Docker)
  • Amazon EKS
  • Red Hat OpenShift 3.x
  • Red Hat OpenShift 4.x
  • Google GKE
  • Azure AKS
  • OKD 3.x
  • OKD 4.x

IBM sub-capacity licensing in Kubernetes Clusters

As one of the leading alternatives to ILMT, our commitment to keeping current with key IBM changes remains strong and so we are pleased to introduce sub-capacity licensing support for containers by integrating with the IBM License Service.

Bring Your Own License (BYOL) for Microsoft and Oracle

Running services in public cloud such as AWS and Azure is becoming more popular and there are multiple ways to pay for these services, either by including the licensing as part of your subscription or by using your existing licenses to cover your instances.  The latter of these is known as Bring Your Own License (BYOL) and with this release we have added a number of capabilities to help you manage your licenses for public cloud services.

Oracle Middleware Verification

Identifying installations of Oracle Middleware is something FNMS has done for a long time however after working closely with the GLAS team we have significantly improved this capability and became the first vendor to be officially verified by the GLAS team for Oracle Middleware inventory.

In this release you can find the following new capabilities:

  • FNMS agent detects new evidence for Oracle Middleware
  • FNMS agent validates directories in OUI evidence to confirm they exist, reducing false positives
  • Audit evidence export includes raw data for Oracle Middleware
  • New recognition rules for various Middleware applications including WebLogic Server/Suite, Forms / Reports, Managed File Transfer (MFT), Service Bus and Stream Analytics

Oracle Optimization Reports

Keeping track of your Oracle licensing can be challenging, especially when the rules differ across various scenarios such as when Oracle databases are running on VMWare virtual machines; as such we are adding some transparency reports to give you visibility of your instances running on VMWare which also give you insights into the potential costs and provide some notes and recommendations to help you manage these.
