Windows Server 2016 Grandfathering Rights: CPU-> Core

Hello,

We have the following situation:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard 2CPU licenses under software assurance.
  • Renewal of software assurance with Windows Sevrer 2016 Standard 2 Core(!) licenses.
  • Number of renewed cores was aligned with real hardware configuration (grandfathering rights).

Problem is maintenance purchases (per Core) in FlexNet Manager cannot be entitled to the original base licenses. Does anyone know how we can deal with this situation?

Many thanks!

Br, Anita

Hi Anita,

A construct we had with some of our customers in the past:

  • Create a "fake" procurement process to track the license change
  • It contains two purchases
    • A positive one with the new Core entitltments, linked to a Core license
    • A negative, "cancellation" one, linked to the CPU license, removing the CPU entitlements from it
  • Both purchase order lines can be linked to the same PO
  • The description should make a clear statement what is the nature of these entitlements
  • It should refer to the actual change process with Microsoft, there must be a date, some IDs and/or documents to make this transparent for the future

Best regards,

Markward
