A starting point would be to consider what tool you are using to gather usage metering data from devices (e.g. the SCCM agent, FlexNet inventory agent, etc), and check what raw usage details are being reported by that tool. (How you do that will depend on the tool you are using.)
Then check whether the raw usage details being gathered match up to any recognition rule on the Visual Studio application that is recognized as installed.
