Best Practice - Unlicensed Windows OS Applications (Virtual)

So we have several DR /cold VM servers that are only powered up during DR exercises when a host to guest relationship is established.

When the VM server is powered down the host to guest relationship is lost and as a result the OS is no longer linked to the windows server license noting that in this particular case the servers will be exempt because cold.

As a best practice I was thinking of using the apply allocations feature to allocate these cold servers to the MS Core license to ensure do not raise a red flag reporting in as unlicensed applications.

Not sure if that will work (will test in dev first, am thinking maybe no as no host) or another better option to remove these cold servers from the Unlicensed applications (windows OS) report?

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig,

Do these DR machines have a role set? They could be exempted from the license either via role-based exemption or by explicitly allocating and exempting them. Either way should work for you, I think.

I don’t speak for Flexera, and we should all be grateful for that
