Change Title

Java Build Version Changes for File Evidences

Class 1

Customers should be prepared and take action

Change Summary

Flexera is making changes to File Evidences used for recognition of Java so as to accurately reflect which builds are Freeware and which are Commercial.

On April 16, 2019, Oracle officially announced commercialization of Java products. These are available under a new license termed as OTN (Oracle Technology Network) and are free for personal individual desktop use and for development, testing, prototyping, and demonstration purposes.

Prior to this announcement, there were a few builds for version 5,6,7 which were only available to Oracle licensed customers. These builds were not available publicly.

For JDK 5, builds after 1.5.0_22 are only available to Oracle Customers V5_Rreference. Up to and including version 1.5.0_22 is freeware and post build of 1.5.0_22 is commercial.

For JDK 6 releases after 1.6.0_45 are only available to Oracle Customers V6_Reference. Up to version 1.6.0_45 is freeware and post build of 1.6.0_45 is commercial

For JDK 7 releases after 1.7.0_80 are only available to Oracle Customers V7_Reference. Up to version 1.7.0_80 is freeware and post build of 1.7.0_80 is commercial

Impact

To accommodate above changes, Flexera is going to update the Java File Evidence for Versions 5, 6 and 7 in the ARL.

Evidences will be separated based on Build information into Free and Commercial application.

With these changes in place, for example, what is the difference between Java Development Kit (Public) 8 Standard and Java Development Kit 8 Standard?

Java Development Kit (Public) 8 Standard - Freeware

Java Development Kit 8 Standard - Commercial

Thanks.

Hi @sohbinong ,

As per Oracle, For version 8 builds after 1.8.0_202 update is only available to Oracle Customers version 8 reference. (Commercial)

For version 8 builds till 1.8.0_202 update is considered to be freeware

Please note that for any updates with BPR builds (build > 30) are considered commercial.

We have detailed content notification for version 8 https://community.flexera.com/t5/FlexNet-Manager-Content-Blog/Java-build-version-changes-in-FlexNet-Manager-Content/ba-p/184425

Hope this helps,
