Oracle has decided in 2019 that any new Update of any Java versions… as well as any new “BPR” build, would require a license… either calculated on the Oracle Processor metric for servers or per user on desktops.
Impacts can be millions of dollars and the tracking of deployed versions is a nightmare… gloomy dance…
Flexera has heavily invested to support their customers in the Java storm:
- Enhanced recognition of Java (using the build numbers to identify commercial and free versions)
- Change in the Unix agent collection to also catch the build level and capture the installation folder for the Java unix instances, that can be this identified as “embedded” (along with WebLogic, SQL Developer etc.)
- A number of community articles have been published to clarify the topic and share best practices around managing Java, as well as solutions to better understand the deployed data
