Is trusted storage used primarily (or wholly) where capability requests are in use?

Jump to solution

We have a deployment to an isolated network with no external access (so no back office server).  Given that binary licenses are encrypted at publication time, do they need to also go into trusted storage or is this really intended for scenarios where licenses arrive via a back office capability response?  If in trusted storage, is it legitimate to manually populate the location with the license.bin file(s) or can it only be done using the admin utility and an activation id?

Thanks!

Yes it is more secure.  Let's say you have a customer with a trusted storage based license on their system who at a later point wants to transfer/move the license to another system.  The licenses can securely be removed from the system and credited back to the entitlement.  The new system can then activate the license without any overuse.

Buffer/file based licenses cannot be returned.  With the same use case a new license will need to be generated for the new system and the customer will need to be told they can no longer use the original license on the original system.  You have no way of taking the original buffer license back so you are trusting that the customer is not using more than they are entitled.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi @MeSoNoob ,

Binary license files (also known as buffer licenses) do not get processed into trusted storage.  Trusted storage is populated when processing capability responses from either FlexNet Operations, a  License Server or when loading trial license rights.    Licenses stored in trusted storage can be securely returned whereas binary license files cannot.  Note in a disconnected/offline scenario you can still use capability requests & responses.  These can be uploaded/downloaded from the Customer Portal as long as there is access to a system that can connect to the internet.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks for the clarification.  I assume our licensing manager can generate capability responses from the corporate account, but what advantage does it confer over using a buffer license, given that we have a closed system with a fixed license pool?  Is it more secure?
