Strange characters in brainware.log after Columbus migration

Strange characters in brainware.log after Columbus migration

Summary

This article discuss why you may be seeing strange characters in your brainware login after the migration from Columbus 6 to 7.

Symptoms

After the migration from Columbus 6 to 7 you discover strange characters (look like Chinese characters) in your brainware.log file.

Cause

Background:
The format of the brainware.log of Columbus 7 has changed from ANSI to UNICODE, therefore ANSI characters are displayed as UNICODE which results in being shown as "Chinese" characters

Cause:
If you still have any Columbus 6 components running on your system or using third party applications that write to the brainware.log, these will write as ANSI into the UNICODE log and cause this problem.

Resolution

Remove all "old" components from your system.

Additional Information

To easily find out what component it is open your brainware.log in a viewer that is capable to change the format such as Baretail.

Applies to C7
