Summary

In order to use ActiveX discovery within Internet Explorer 11 for App Portal, certain client settings must be applied.

Symptoms

In order to use ActiveX discovery within Internet Explorer 11 for App Portal, the client machine using Internet Explorer 11 must be correctly configured.

Cause

Internet Explorer 11 will not run ActiveX by default.

Resolution

In order to allow ActiveX to run, which in turn allows ActiveX discovery to complete successfully, Internet Explorer 11 must first be configured to run in the document mode of IE9. This is done by default in the web.config with the following line:
add name="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=9"

In addition to this, the browser must also be set to render the site in Compatibility View or Enterprise mode.
To render the site in Compatibility View, add the App Portal site to the Compatibility View list within Internet Explorer.
To render the site in Enterprise mode, add the App Portal site to the Enterprise Mode Site with IE 9 document mode

Finally, the App Portal site should also be added as a Trusted Site.

To deploy the actual ActiveX plugin that handles the computer discovery on to all devices, the available MSI can be used. Otherwise, a prompt to download the plugin is displayed when accessing the site for the first time.
