What is the App Portal message "The computer name could not be identified" displayed during checkout?

Question

What is the App Portal message "The computer name could not be identified" displayed during checkout?

Answer

This will typically occur when App Portal is unable to discover the client computer name when logging into the App Portal site. Information about the computer discovery can be found in the user log for the user logging in.. Note that a user log will only be created when verbose logging is enabled.

If there is an issue discovering the computer name, then the following will typically be seen in the user log

Could not retrieve Machine Name from DNS for IP 172.19.12.116 Page_Load 9/27/2016 5:04:04 PM 1 (0x0001)

If successful, the following entries will be seen in the log:

IP Address 192.168.0.30 is a VALID IPv4 Address Page_Load 6/22/2015 2:49:23 PM 1 (0x0001)
Discovery Method is DNS. Querying DNS to get Machine Name from IP 192.168.0.30 Page_Load 6/22/2015 2:49:23 PM 1 (0x0001)
DNS returned Machine Name as SCCM2012 for IP 192.168.0.30 Page_Load 6/22/2015 2:49:23 PM 1 (0x0001)

App Portal calls .NET APIs to get machine name using a reverse lookup of the IP address reported by the browser. The following powershell script can be used demonstrate the issue outside of App Portal:

$ComputerIPAddress = ?172.19.12.116?
[System.Net.Dns]::GetHostEntry($ComputerIPAddress).HostName

This Powershell script will need to return a valid machine name.Until this occurs, App Portal will not be able to discover the computer name via a reverse DNS lookup.
