Unable to delete msxml4.dll
Observation
It has been reported by customers that they are unable to replicate msxml4.dll. Does the FlexNet Publisher toolkit have any dependency on it?
Answer
For trusted storage based licensing, FlexNet Publisher has a known dependency on the msxml4.dll (for manual response generator UI), but this dll was a part of the Microsoft OS (except Windows Vista) and we are not aware of any circumstances where the FlexNet Publisher Toolkit keeps updating/downloading it.
- FlexNet Publisher no longer has this dependency. A few years ago, FlexNet Publisher was upgraded to
msxml6.dll. - In the last few years, the
msxml4.dllhas been designated as end-of-life and Microsoft no longer supports it. - If scanning tools encounter the
msxml4.dllfile, it gets reported as a "security issue". Therefore, customers want to remove it.
There are known instances (on the web) where people are not able to remove it. There are a few workarounds for this issue:
- Rename the file and try removing it, as described in MSXML4 DLLs still are in the c:\windows\sysWOW64\. See also the Kapersky Support Forum.
- Another method could be to Remove Microsoft XML4.0 from Control Panel > Programs > View Installed Programs and install Microsoft XML 4.0 SP3 again, as described in Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 3 (KB2758694).
