‘This configuration section cannot be used…’ error when opening Authentication Properties in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
This article explains how to resolve an error that appears when opening Authentication Properties for the ManageSoftRL virtual directory in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
Error
This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level.
The ManageSoftRL virtual directory is used for reporting agent inventories on beacons and inventory servers in FlexNet Manager Suite and Flexera One IT Asset Management.
The error occurs when Flexnet Manager Suite is prevented from overriding the applicable IIS authentication settings.
To resolve the error message, follow these steps:
- Open IIS Manager.
- Under Sites select Default Web Site.
- In the Features view, select Configuration Editor.
- From the Section drop-down menu at the top left, select:
system.webServer/security/authentication/windowsAuthentication- Select Unlock Section and then restart IIS.
- Select Lock Section and restart IIS again.
- Repeat steps 4 through 6 for Anonymous authentication and Basic authentication in:
