Measure application resource consumption with Snow Commander
Snow Commander enables administrators to create saved searches for monitoring resources consumed by specific applications. This helps capture operational data points and simplifies reporting on CPU and memory usage tied to key applications.
Creating a saved search
- Log in to Commander and go to the Tools menu, then select Search.
- In the Help Me Find chooser, click VMs.
- Set the search scope to Global, or select a specific location if needed.
- Apply a filter:
- Filter By → Guest OS Details > Applications → contains → (Name contains the application string, for example, SQL).
- Filter By → Guest OS Details > Applications → contains → (Name contains the application string, for example, SQL).
- Click Search.
- On the Results tab, confirm that only the desired application instances appear. Adjust filters as needed.
Adding columns for resource data
- On the Results tab, right-click any row and select Pick Columns.
- Add relevant columns such as CPU Usage Daily Avg (%) and Memory Consumed Daily Avg (%).
- Click OK.
- Click Save Search, assign a meaningful name, and select a category like Capacity & Performance.
- Click OK.
Scheduling the search
- On the Results tab, click Schedule.
- Enter a descriptive name and category, then click Next.
- Add recipient emails in the To: and CC: fields.
- Complete the Subject and Body fields for the report email.
- Enable checkboxes for:
- Adding rows with Totals and/or Averages for suitable columns.
- Displaying aggregate values At the top of the results and/or At the bottom of the results.
- Set Frequency and Recurrence options for delivery.
- Click Next, then Finish.
Outcome
After completing these steps, the saved search provides resource consumption data for selected applications, either viewed within Commander or delivered regularly through scheduled emails.
