What ports do Snow License Manager, Snow Inventory Server and Snow Inventory Agent use?
What ports are being used to communicate to Snow License Manager and Snow Inventory Server (Master, Service Gateway and Agent)
Environment
Relevant Snow products/processes, full versions, functionality
- Snow Inventory 5.x.x
- Snow Inventory Agent Windows 5.x.x
- Snow License Manager (SLM) 8.x.x
Resolution
During the installation of Snow Inventory Server, the port is to be defined, this port is what will be used by the agents to communicate to SIS. And for SLM it is also defined by the administrator, via the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). Those are the only ports on which Snow will communicate.

This can also be found for instance in the configuration files:
- C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Snow Inventory\Server\snowserver.config
- C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Inventory\Agent\snowagent.config
- C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Snow License Manager\Web\web.config
For deploying an agent, please find attached User Guide on what ports are required. Other than that, those are the only ports and pretty much all defined by the user during installation.
It is also important to note that the source port is by designed randomized, it will be good to understand this as it is very easy to be confused that Snow is doing the randomization. However, this is how networking works in the Operating System level.
In summary, the source machine will create a randomized port number. If for instance it will need to communicate to the endpoints, it will communicate it on the designated assigned user defined port in this case above, I used port 8080 as an example as the user defined port to be used during the installation.
So that means, the source port number is randomized number (as defined by Networking Standards IETF, and not Snow) and communicate to the destination port number 800.
Below is a good understanding of this Networking by designed, that the source port number is randomised.
