Snow Update Service does not open after self-update error
Following the Snow Update Service self-update on January 28th, 2026, errors have appeared in Snow Update Service logs for customers and SPE environments.
The Snow Update Service GUI repeatedly attempts to download updates. This creates new process identifiers in task manager which become repeated log entries.
Resolve the issue by allowing the Snow Update Service to regenerate its configuration file:
- Log on to the Snow server with administrative permissions.
- Stop the Snow Update Service Windows service.
- Ensure the Snow Update Service GUI and the Snow Update Service tray notification application are fully closed (use Task Manager if necessary).
- Navigate to the Snow Update Service installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Snow Software\Snow Update Service - Locate the file
srscsettings.json. - Rename the file. For example:
srscsettings.json.bak
- Open the Snow Update Service GUI. The client should now complete the download and open normally.
The Snow Update Service automatically regenerates a new srscsettings.json file and resumes normal operation.
NOTE: If custom configuration values were previously set in srscsettings.json, review the newly generated file and reapply any required settings after the service starts successfully.
After completing these steps:
- The Snow Update Service GUI opens normally without restarting in a loop.
- The Snow Update Service no longer repeatedly downloads or reinitializes.
- Errors related to repeated self-update attempts are no longer logged.
- The Snow Update Service can check for and apply updates successfully.
