Required permissions for RN150 appliance to scan VMware environment
The RN150 appliance requires specific permissions to scan VMware environments. Understanding these requirements ensures successful discovery and inventory collection while limiting access to only what is necessary.
vCenter access requirements
The RN150 appliance uses read-only access to vCenter for discovery and inventory collection.
- Assign the Read-Only role at the Virtual Datacenter level
- Ensure the role propagates to all ESXi hosts
This access allows the appliance to collect guest virtual machine (VM) information without making configuration changes.
ESXi host access requirements (direct access)
When scanning standalone ESXi hosts that are not managed by vCenter, the RN150 appliance requires:
- Root access to each ESXi host
Permission scope
No additional privileges beyond read-only access to vCenter are required for discovery and inventory collection.
Outcome
Create a service account with a Read-Only role in vCenter for RN150 scanning.
For standalone ESXi hosts, provide root credentials.
This configuration enables successful discovery while avoiding unnecessary elevated permissions.
